Project co-financed by the European Union from the European Regional Development Fund under the Smart Growth Operational Program 2014-2020. The project is carried out under a competition of the National Centre for Research and Development: Competition no. 6/1.1.1/2019 Quick Path for SMEs.

The purpose of the project is to elaborate an innovative safety system for production processes based on the fusion of vision technology/TOF and thermal vision technology.

The Unitem Sp. z o.o. Company aims to achieve its goal by executing a R&D works plan, which includes:

  • creation of a laboratory system prototype that creates a precise 3D map of the supervised area and thermal vision of objects with temperature close to human body temperature that will overlap on the said map;
  • elaboration, training, and testing of artificial intelligence algorithms classifying objects identified in the work area as human – not human;
  • combination of functionalities listed above into a single system and testing it in conditions simulating actual conditions;
  • final tests in actual conditions.

The result of project will be elaboration of innovative safety system – ThermoSafety that utilises the fusion of images coming from far infra-red sensor (thermal vision camera) and depth map sensor (system of stereo cameras or TOF (Time of Flight) sensor), as well as module that identifies human in the work area on the basis of artificial intelligence algorithms. The fusion of modality listed above aims to have a positive impact on the quality of human (operator) classification in the work area and improve system operation efficiency, in particular during work in difficult environment conditions. The system developed under the project will allow to define zones with various safety level. The system and its software will be intended for monitoring safety in various work environments, and its applications include:

  • industrial robots designed for execution of works in the human robot collaboration mode (so-called cobots);
  • production lines that utilise robots or manipulators;
  • testing device prototypes;
  • special machinery with complex production process for which the application of standard safety curtains is impossible or severely hindered;
  • big machinery operating in high congestion environment.
